Gizmo of the Month - JCB Toughphone / Sonim XP1

Hardware & Gizmos

JCB ToughphonePeople often say to me: "Why can't I just buy an ordinary phone which is reliable and easy to use without all the fancy gizmos, cameras and stuff which just make it go wrong?". Well this perhaps isn't quite what they meant but its kinda cool anyway and providing it's as tough as I'm sure they will say it is, it could be useful for a whole bunch of people.

How tough it actually is does appear to be somewhat of a mystery though since as pointed out in this review "Sonim (who make the phone) say that it's rated IP52, Data Select (who distribute the phone) say IP54, and the JCB publicity leaflet says IP53." Either way none of these ratings are particularly amazing as they simply protect against dust and water spray, personally I'd like to have seen it properly water proof so when I rescue it from a puddle, toilet, sink or whatever its still working.

Anyway gripes aside I've no doubt its probably one of the tougher mobile phones out there (with the exception of the Phillips Savvy - which is for some reason totally indestructible) and I've no doubt it would make a great phone to have by your side when you are working on the car (a situation which has caused the death of many of my previous phones).

Of course if you cant easily obtain it with your average mobile phone contract business or otherwise; like so many phones it wont see the light of day.

All we need to do now is get Sonim to make a DeWALT one so it can be cool as well ;)

If anyone out there actually owns this phone let me know, would be interesting to hear what you think of it...
